Orthodontic pliers (overview)
Also called: ortho pliers
Many special pliers bend wires, place bands and cut ligatures in braces work.
Orthodontic offices use a wide range of pliers. Each has a specific beak shape for bending, cutting or holding wires and bands. Keep them organized by type so the right one is ready.
How to spot it
- Many plier types stored on a rack; beaks differ in shape (round, pyramid, flat, cutting).
What it is used for
- Placing and adjusting braces and appliances.
Safety and care
- Semicritical item (it touches the inside of the mouth): clean it, package it and heat-sterilize it after every patient.
- Lubricate hinges per the maker's instructions after sterilization so they do not stiffen.
