Four-handed dentistry basics
Also called: four-handed dentistry, team dentistry
Operator and assistant work as a seated team to save motion and time.
Four-handed dentistry means the operator and a trained assistant work together with the patient supine, both seated comfortably close to the patient. Instruments and materials are set out in order ahead of time, motions are kept small, and the assistant handles every task the state allows assistants to do.
What it is used for
- Talk through the procedure before you start so you know what comes next.
- Reposition the patient or yourselves as needed to see better and avoid strain.
Safety and care
- What assistants may do varies by state; follow your state's rules and your office protocol.
