Setting the tray: left to right in order of use

Also called: tray order, sequence of use

Instruments go on the tray in the order they will be used, usually left to right.

Trays are set in the order the instruments will be used, usually starting on the left (some offices set them top to bottom). That way the assistant always knows where the next instrument is and can return each one to its spot. Place the tray as close to the patient as you can, in the static zone.

How to spot it

  1. Basic setup (mirror, explorer, cotton pliers) is usually first on the left.

On the tray, in order

  1. Return each instrument to its place after use so the order stays clear.

Safety and care

  1. Keep sharp working ends pointed away from your hands.
  2. Do not open sterile packages until you are ready to use them.
