Surgical suction tip
Also called: surgical aspirator tip, Frazier tip, Fergusson tip, surgical evacuator
A thin metal or plastic suction tube that clears blood from the surgical site.
Surgical suction tips are much thinner than the HVE tip, so they can reach into a socket or under a flap. In surgery, use one tip only in the surgical site and a separate tip or saliva ejector for the throat area, so saliva is not carried into the wound.
How to spot it
- A long thin tube with a gentle bend; metal versions may have a thumb hole and come with a wire stylet for cleaning.
What it is used for
- Suctioning blood, saline and debris during extractions and surgery.
Safety and care
- Critical item (it goes into soft tissue or touches bone): clean it, package it and heat-sterilize it after every patient.
- Brush the inside clean before sterilizing; disposable tips are single-use.
