Irrigating syringe

Also called: Monoject-type syringe, irrigation syringe, curved-tip syringe

A plastic syringe with a blunt or curved tip for rinsing the surgical site with saline.

During surgery, sterile saline or water is squirted from a plastic syringe to cool the bur, keep bone moist and wash away debris. The tip is blunt so it does not damage tissue. Patients may also go home with one to rinse a socket if the dentist directs.

How to spot it

  • A clear plastic syringe with a curved or bent blunt tip.

What it is used for

  • Irrigating during bone removal and before closing a site.

Safety and care

  • Use sterile solution and a sterile syringe in surgery; single-use.
