Diamond bur
Also called: diamond, diamond point, diamond stone
A bur coated with diamond grit that grinds rather than cuts, used for crown preps.
Diamond burs have tiny diamond particles bonded to the head instead of blades, so they grind tooth structure. They come in many shapes (round, flame, cylinder, tapered) and grits; a colored ring on the shank often shows the grit (the color code varies by maker).
How to spot it
- A rough, sandpaper-like head instead of blades.
- Often a colored ring on the neck.
What it is used for
- Crown and veneer preparations, contouring and finishing (fine grits).
Safety and care
- Many diamonds are single-use; reusable ones are cleaned with a bur brush and sterilized.
