8. Load and sterilize
Also called: run the autoclave, load the sterilizer
Load so steam reaches everything, then run the cycle the manufacturer specifies.
Arrange the load so steam (or vapor or hot air) can circulate around every package: do not overload, and stand pouches on their edge. Run the time and temperature cycle the sterilizer's manufacturer specifies. All sterilizers used must be FDA-cleared medical sterilizers.
What you do
- Check the reservoir water level before the first cycle.
- Watch or record the cycle's time, temperature and pressure when it ends.
Safety and care
- Improper loading and overloading are common reasons for a failed spore test.
