9. Let packs cool and dry

Also called: drying cycle

Do not touch packs until they are cool and dry.

Let packs dry inside the sterilizer before you take them out. CDC explains that hot, damp packs act like wicks and can pull bacteria in from your hands. A pack that comes out wet is not considered sterile and must be reprocessed.

How to spot it

  1. Damp spots, water droplets or a wet paper side on a pouch.

What you do

  1. Let the drying phase finish; use clean, dry hands or gloves when unloading.

Safety and care

  1. Trays and packs are hot; use the tray handle or heat-resistant gloves.
