Model trimmer
Also called: cast trimmer, plaster trimmer
A spinning, water-cooled grinding wheel that shapes the bases of stone models.
A model trimmer grinds the base of a gypsum (plaster or stone) model into a neat, even shape. Water runs over the wheel to cut dust and keep it from clogging. It is used for study models and orthodontic records.
How to spot it
- A bench machine with a big round wheel behind a guard, a flat table in front and a water line.
What it is used for
- Keep the water running whenever the wheel turns, hold the model firmly on the table, and trim in small passes as the manufacturer directs.
Safety and care
- Wear eye protection and keep fingers clear of the wheel.
- Disinfect impressions and models brought from the operatory before trimming.
- Clean out the slurry and care for the wheel per the manufacturer's instructions.
