Whitening gel

Also called: bleaching gel, carbamide peroxide, hydrogen peroxide gel

Peroxide gels that lighten the color of natural teeth.

Whitening gels use carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. A 10% carbamide peroxide gel breaks down into about 3.5% hydrogen peroxide. In-office products are much stronger (about 25% to 40% hydrogen peroxide). Whitening does not change the color of fillings or crowns.

How to spot it

  • Syringes of clear gel, custom trays, and for in-office use a gum barrier resin.

What it is used for

  • Home trays are made from models; in-office whitening uses a gum barrier before the gel goes on.

Safety and care

  • Strong peroxide can irritate or burn gums and skin; protect soft tissue and wear gloves and eye protection.
  • The most common side effects are tooth sensitivity and gum irritation.
