Temporary cement

Also called: temp cement, provisional cement, ZOE

A weaker cement that holds a temporary crown until the final one is ready.

Temporary cements hold provisional (temporary) crowns and bridges so they can be removed later. Many are zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE), which is soothing to the pulp. Eugenol interferes with the setting of composite resin, so non-eugenol versions are used when resin work will follow.

How to spot it

  • Two tubes (base and catalyst) or an automix syringe; ZOE has a clove smell.

What it is used for

  • Mix as directed, fill the temporary crown lightly, seat it, and remove the excess after it sets.

Safety and care

  • Clean excess away from the gums, which can irritate tissue.
  • Ask about eugenol (clove) allergy if your office requires it.
