Two-handed transfer (bulky instruments)

Also called: two-handed exchange

For bulky items like forceps and dam clamps, take with one hand and give with the other.

Heavy or bulky instruments such as surgical forceps, rubber dam clamp forceps and the dam itself are passed with two hands: one hand takes the used item and the other delivers the new one. It takes more movement and limits your use of the HVE and air-water syringe.

How to spot it

  1. Used for extraction forceps, clamp forceps and the rubber dam.

On the tray, in order

  1. 1. Take the used instrument with one hand.
  2. 2. Deliver the new instrument in the position of use with the other hand.
  3. 3. For forceps, place the handles in the operator's palm with the beaks pointing the way they will be used.

Safety and care

  1. Keep a firm grip; heavy instruments can slip.
