Tofflemire matrix retainer
Also called: Tofflemire, universal retainer, matrix retainer
A clamp that holds a metal band tight around a tooth to form a missing wall.
When decay takes out the side of a back tooth, the filling needs a temporary wall to press against. The Tofflemire retainer holds a matrix band in a loop around the tooth. It has an outer knob that tightens the band in the vise, an inner knob that makes the loop bigger or smaller, a spindle, a diagonal slot and guide slots.
How to spot it
- A flat metal frame with two knobs at one end and a U-shaped head with slots at the other.
- The diagonal slot side faces the gums; the smooth side faces the chewing surface.
What it is used for
- Used for Class II fillings (fillings that include a side surface).
- The assistant often loads the band and places it, then adds a wedge.
Safety and care
- Semicritical item (it touches the inside of the mouth): clean it, package it and heat-sterilize it after every patient.
- Matrix bands are single-use.
