Curing light

Also called: light-curing unit, LED curing light, blue light

A handheld blue light that hardens composite, sealants and other light-cured materials.

Many tooth-colored materials stay soft until they are hit with blue light. The curing light gives off that light through a wand. See the machines section for care and checking its output.

How to spot it

  • A pen- or gun-shaped handpiece with a curved light guide, often with an orange shield.

What it is used for

Safety and care

  • Do not look at the light: use an orange shield or filter glasses for the team and the patient.
  • Cover the tip with a barrier sleeve, and clean and disinfect the handpiece between patients.
