Cryer elevators (pair)
Also called: Cryer, East-West elevators, triangular elevators
A left and right pair of elevators with sharp triangular blades for removing molar roots.
Cryer elevators come as a pair (one for each side). Each has a sharp, pointed, triangular blade set at an angle to the shank, like a claw. They are turned like a wheel to lift out a root left in a lower molar socket.
How to spot it
- Triangular, pointed blade bent at an angle; two mirror-image instruments.
What it is used for
- Removing retained roots of lower molars.
Safety and care
- Critical item (it goes into soft tissue or touches bone): clean it, package it and heat-sterilize it after every patient.
- Sharp working end: carry it point-down in a closed cassette, and never reach blindly into a pile of instruments.
