Cowhorn forceps (#16, #23)
Also called: cowhorn, #23 forceps, #16 forceps
Lower molar forceps with two pointed, curved beaks that fit between the roots.
Cowhorn forceps have two sharp, horn-shaped beaks that slip into the furcation (where a lower molar's roots split). Squeezing them lifts the tooth up out of the socket.
How to spot it
- Two pointed, curved beaks like a cow's horns.
What it is used for
- Removing lower molars.
Safety and care
- Critical item (it goes into soft tissue or touches bone): clean it, package it and heat-sterilize it after every patient.
- The tooth can pop out suddenly; the operator protects the upper teeth.
