Alginate mixing bowl and spatula
Also called: rubber bowl, flexible bowl, alginate spatula, impression spatula
A flexible rubber bowl and wide stiff spatula for mixing alginate impression material.
Alginate is a powder mixed with water to make study model impressions. Add the powder to the water, then mix by pressing the material against the side of the flexible bowl with a wide, stiff spatula until smooth. Work fast: alginate sets in a few minutes.
How to spot it
- Bowl: soft, flexible rubber, often green or blue.
- Spatula: a wide, stiff blade, wider than a cement spatula.
What it is used for
- Mixing alginate for study models, opposing models and some appliances.
- The lower impression is often taken first because it is usually easier for the patient.
Safety and care
- Clean and disinfect the bowl and spatula after use.
- Rinse and disinfect each impression before pouring or sending.
