3. Clean: ultrasonic cleaner or washer-disinfector

Also called: cleaning, decontamination

Remove all blood and debris, preferably with a machine instead of by hand.

Cleaning comes before sterilization, every time. Debris left on instruments can shield germs from the sterilizer. CDC prefers automated cleaning (an ultrasonic cleaner or instrument washer-disinfector) because it works better and keeps your hands away from sharp, dirty instruments; there is no need to presoak or scrub first.

What you do

  1. Load instruments in a basket or cassette, close the lid, and run the cycle the manufacturer sets.
  2. Wear utility gloves, mask, eye protection and a gown; splashing is likely.

Safety and care

  1. Never put your hands in a running ultrasonic tank.
