CBCT unit
Also called: cone beam CT, 3D x-ray, cone beam
A 3D x-ray machine for implants, root canals and complex cases.
CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) rotates around the head and builds a three-dimensional picture of the teeth and jaws. It shows things flat x-rays cannot, such as bone width for implants. It usually gives more radiation than regular dental x-rays, so dentists order it only when it is truly needed.
How to spot it
- Looks like a panoramic machine, often combined with one, with a larger head support.
What it is used for
- Used for implant planning, impacted teeth, some root canal and trauma cases.
Safety and care
- ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable): use the smallest area and lowest settings that answer the question.
- Barrier or disinfect positioning parts between patients.
