Dental air compressor
Also called: compressor, air system
The machine that makes the compressed air that runs handpieces and syringes.
The compressor pumps air into a tank under pressure and sends it to every operatory. Handpieces, air-water syringes and the chairs depend on it. Dental compressors are usually oil-free and have a dryer, because oil or water in the air can damage handpieces and weaken bonding.
How to spot it
- A motor on top of a metal tank, with a pressure gauge, in a utility closet or basement. It cycles on and off loudly.
What it is used for
- Your office opening and closing checklist says when it is switched on and off.
Safety and care
- Tasks such as draining moisture from the tank, changing filters and yearly service follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Do not block its airflow or store supplies on it.
