Chemical vapor sterilizer solution

Also called: chemiclave solution, vapor sterilant

The alcohol and formaldehyde solution used in a chemiclave.

Unsaturated chemical vapor sterilizers use a special solution made mostly of alcohol with a small amount (0.23%) of formaldehyde. The machine heats it to a vapor under pressure. Formaldehyde is a mutagen and a potential human carcinogen (cancer-causing chemical).

How to spot it

  • Bottles labeled for chemical vapor sterilizers, near the chemiclave.

What it is used for

  • Fill the sterilizer only with the specified solution.

Safety and care

  • Read the SDS; use good ventilation; wear gloves and eyewear when filling.
  • Used solution may be hazardous waste; follow state and local rules.
